In WWII Leningrad, instead of execution, two criminals are given the impossible task of finding a dozen eggs for a Soviet colonel's daughter's wedding cake.  The city has been cut off from all supplies and is facing lawlessness and total deprivation.  The book is funny, sad and at time terrifying.
